Dr. Daniel Townsend

Nantucket’s only year-round ophthalmologist since 1984

Founding Physician

Daniel J. Townsend, M.D.

Ophthalmology & Oculofacial Plastic Surgery

Since 1984, Dr. Townsend has been Nantucket’s only year-round ophthalmologist, performing more than 1,200 surgeries on-island at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and his own office-based surgical facility. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, with subspecialty certification from the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

He graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from St. Olaf College in 1976 and earned his medical degree from Mayo Medical School in 1980. He then trained at Harvard, completing an internship at New England Deaconess Hospital, a residency in ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, and a fellowship in oculoplastic and orbital surgery in 1985.

Dr. Townsend has taught ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School since 1985 and is a senior surgeon at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, where he served as president of the medical staff and has sat on the Board of Surgeons since 2003. His clinical focus is oculofacial plastic surgery, facial reanimation, and orbital and facial trauma, and he has performed more than 14,000 eyelid surgeries over his career. He was also among the earliest researchers into the therapeutic use of what is now known as Botox.

He is co-author of the Atlas of Eyelid Surgery and co-editor of the orbit section of the Harvard System of Ophthalmology, and his work has appeared in journals including the New England Journal of Medicine. Beyond his academic work, Dr. Townsend has a personal understanding of rural and island medicine, having served with the U.S. Public Health Service in Alaska, on the island of St. Lucia, and in Nepal, where he taught oculoplastic surgery at the invitation of the Nepalese government. He now brings that experience directly to Nantucket Concierge Medicine.
